Hamilton County Timeline: 1816 to Today

The first settlers began arriving in what would become Hamilton County around 1816. These early families came to Southern Illinois seeking land, opportunity, and a place to build homes, farms, and communities.

Hamilton County was officially created by the Illinois General Assembly on February 8, 1821. The new county was formed from part of White County and named for Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers and the first Secretary of the United States Treasury.

Soon after Hamilton County was formed, McLeansboro was selected as the county seat. The town was named for Dr. William McLean, an early settler associated with the original town plat. As the county seat, McLeansboro became the center of local government, public records, court activity, civic gatherings, and commerce.

During the nineteenth century, McLeansboro continued to develop as a town and civic center. Local histories note important incorporation milestones during this period, including McLeansboro’s growth from an early settlement into a village and later a city. The community’s development reflected the broader growth of Hamilton County as farms, businesses, churches, schools, and local institutions became more established.

In 1884, the Victorian-era home associated with the Cloud and McCoy families was built in McLeansboro. The building later became known as the McCoy Memorial Library, one of the community’s most recognized historic landmarks.

Hamilton County communities were served by a number of local newspapers during this period. These publications recorded public notices, family milestones, business activity, elections, school news, agriculture, social events, and the everyday life of the county. For historians and genealogists, old newspapers remain valuable windows into Hamilton County’s past.

The McCoy Memorial Library opened in McLeansboro in 1921. Over time, it became an important educational, cultural, and historical resource for the community. Today, the library and related historical resources help preserve local stories, artifacts, photographs, and family history materials.

The Tri-State Tornado of March 18, 1925, became one of the deadliest tornadoes in American history. The storm traveled across parts of Missouri, Southern Illinois, and Indiana, causing extraordinary destruction. According to the National Weather Service, it moved across rural Hamilton and White counties, where the combined death toll reached 65. The tragedy remains one of the most significant natural disasters in Southern Illinois history and a reminder of the resilience of rural communities.

The current Hamilton County Courthouse in McLeansboro was built in the late 1930s and dedicated in 1939. It continues to serve as a central landmark and the home of county government, and remains one of the strongest symbols of Hamilton County’s civic identity.

Today, Hamilton County remains connected to its agricultural roots while continuing to support residents, businesses, public services, and community development. Its history can be seen in the courthouse square, local farms, churches, cemeteries, libraries, museums, family stories, and annual community traditions.
