Hamilton County, Illinois, has a story rooted in frontier settlement, agriculture, public service, and the enduring strength of small-town community life. Located in Southern Illinois in the region often known as “Little Egypt,” Hamilton County has grown from early pioneer settlements into a county defined by family farms, civic pride, local enterprise, and a deep respect for its past.

Founded in 1821

Hamilton County was officially established on February 8, 1821, when the Illinois General Assembly created the county from part of White County. The county was named for Alexander Hamilton, Revolutionary War figure, statesman, and the first Secretary of the United States Treasury.

Early settlers began arriving in the area before the county was formally organized, drawn by available land, natural resources, timber, water, and the opportunity to build a future on the Illinois frontier. As more families settled in the region, the need for local government, courts, records, and civic organization led to the formation of Hamilton County.

McLeansboro Becomes the County Seat

McLeansboro was selected as the county seat in 1821 and remains the center of county government today. The community was named for Dr. William McLean, an early settler associated with the original town plat.

From its earliest years, McLeansboro served as the place where residents came to conduct public business, trade goods, attend court, gather for civic events, and connect with neighbors from across the county. The courthouse square became an important center of government and community life, a role it continues to hold today.

One of the most devastating regional events was the Tri-State Tornado of March 18, 1925, which tore across parts of Missouri, Southern Illinois, and Indiana. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado moved across rural Hamilton and White counties, where the combined death toll reached 65. Like many communities affected by the disaster, Hamilton County residents carried forward a legacy of rebuilding, resilience, and care for neighbors.

Historic Places and Local Memory

Hamilton County’s history is preserved in places that residents still know and use today. The Hamilton County Courthouse in McLeansboro remains a prominent landmark and the center of county government. The McCoy Memorial Library and local museum help preserve photographs, artifacts, family histories, and stories from across the county.

Downtown McLeansboro, historic homes, cemeteries, churches, schools, and community gathering places all contribute to the county’s living memory. Together, they tell a story not just of dates and buildings, but of the people who built Hamilton County and continue to shape it.
